There was a person early on in Checks & Balances existence who had a great smile, a gregarious nature and was quite capable of accomplishing a task. His name was Christopher Crutchfield. Now, we learned later in life his desire to and success in creating a reenactment/fear instilling activity/teachable opportunity for people to experience the horrors of life of an enslaved person seeking their freedom by heading north, following the North Star.
This innovation of our friend and later lawyer for our business is emblematic of how someone from St Paul had the vision, the drive and an ability to bring about its fruition.
Additionally, during the beginning of the 20th Century, a process called the St Paul Safe Layover, or the O’Connor System occurred. Big John O’Connor was the police chief in St Paul. His brother Richard (Dick) O’Connor was the Police Commissioner. The two of them brought forth the O’Connor System, where if the criminals of the time paid a bribe, at the Hollyhocks, a St Paul public establishment, and committed no crimes in the Capitol City, they were granted a safe haven and further protections from the prying eyes of the federal government. This was completely in effect from 1922-1933 during Prohibition.
